Some Small Truths

A seasoned analyst, with 40 years of experience gained in helping patients explore the depths of their unconscious, Dr. Bernstein takes the reader through paths unfamiliar. Filled with extraordinary insights fueled by patient’s most intimate of fantasies, Dr. Bernstein explains with perspective and humor the illuminating insights and change that come with exploring the inner space of the psyche. Each short essay takes a subject, relevant to many, and explores it through the lens of the unconscious.

About the Author
Joel S Bernstein was a PhD psychologist, Psychoanalyst and a certified clinical hypnotist. He was founder and president of the Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies in New Jersey, a classically trained pianist, composer, and a black-belt martial artist. He was greatly respected and beloved.

Editorial Reviews

Dr. Bernstein’s work shows a wide ranging mind and a highly original one. His insights are fresh and compelling, his style clear and vigorous without being dogmatic. His new perspectives show his approach to therapy as a joint effort between doctor and patient, to achieve sometimes surprising insights. I have never before read the work of a therapist who so obviously likes his patients. –Joanne Greenberg I Never Promised You a Rose Garden

This book is a powerful and compelling collection of essays on a myriad of topics seen through a brilliant psychoanalyst’s perspective. The reader understands the respect and awe the author has for both his patients and their unconscious process. He takes us with him through the exploration of his patient s character traits, to their innermost fantasy life at the heart of what has troubled their lives. This author’s unique view is a gem. –Judith Korner MD, PhD Professor of Medicine, Columbia University Medical Center

Dr. Bernstein is a talented analyst who brings to life the inner workings of the unconscious. His view does not ask for logical reasoning, neither (as he explains) does the unconscious. However, as he excavates the layers of his patients’ inner lives, we witness a rich unfolding of deep and buried impulses that emerge with humor and depth of understanding. This ultimately leads to more energy for the person stuck in what was a spiral of behavioral repetitions. Fascinating read on every subject heading. –Lorna Goldberg LCSW, Psychoanalyst – Director of The Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies

Testimonials

“IPS has been a highly welcoming environment for me in my pursuit of post-graduate analytic studies. It has impressive, intelligent faculty, analysts and control analysts who have been instrumental in expanding my curiosity and the understanding of both me and my patients.”

“When asked about IPS by my friends, co-workers or family I usually begin by saying ‘this place is different; it is neither the typical school nor the typical school experience.’ The first thing that comes to my mind is the importance given to, and consistency in reminding candidates of practicing with nonjudgmental attitude and not boxing an individual into a theory but instead remembering the uniqueness of each individual. My experience at IPS has been an excellent one and has without a doubt exceeded my expectations.”

“For the past two years at IPS, I have had an amazing experience. Not only have I learned so much in the area of psychoanalysis, I have had the chance to meet excellent professionals who not only have so much knowledge and expertise in the area of psychoanalysis but have also given me the opportunity to experience what is to me one of the most important themes throughout the experience at IPS: the uniqueness of each individual and the practice of an accepting, non-judgmental attitude. I take every opportunity I have to tell others in the field about IPS, as this has been so far one of the best learning experiences I have had.”

“As a candidate at IPS, I have experienced a welcoming, warm, nonjudgmental environment with an opportunity to grow both professionally as well as at a personal level. From its founder to the instructors, they welcome candidates with a genuine goal to see each individual succeed and become the best they can be. My experience at the IPS has indeed exceeded my expectations.”

As an entering 4-year IPS candidate for the 2017-2018 term; I can attest to the tremendous administrative, instructional, and educational support received from the IPS staff.

Additionally, I can vouch wholeheartedly for the increased confidence and quality in my therapeutic work with patients which is due solely to the in-depth academic curriculum and collaborative components embedded and implemented within this psychoanalytic program.

I am thoroughly grateful for being a part of this psychoanalytic institute. This continued academic investment in my professional growth as a therapist has been immeasurable!

Warmest Regards,

Rosena P.

“With expert instruction, supervision and analysis IPS provides an open and collaborative model of education, aimed at the practical application of Psychoanalytic teachings.  By introducing a theory based as opposed to theory driven model, IPS greatly improves the understanding of the nature of character thus allowing for candidates to learn about themselves and their practice in continuously exponential and deeper ways that are immediately applicable.”

About Us

The Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies welcomes you into an atmosphere where faculty and candidates are partners in the study of the depths and wonders of the human psyche. Our four year curriculum provides a strong foundation in classical psychoanalysis and prepares candidates for independent practice in adult or child and adolescent psychotherapy.

The Institute offers advanced post graduate training for candidates with a minimum of a Master’s Degree in a variety of fields including social work, psychology, counseling, psychiatry and nursing. Our approach is collegial—students are considered partners and participate in shaping the Institute’s programs, policies and practices. Our Psychotherapy Referral Service connects candidates and faculty with patients seeking therapy
